The Bridge Back to Us

A home-study course for the partners of men who went to boarding school

If you're in a relationship with a man who went to boarding school, you might have felt a sort of block – even if you couldn’t name it.

  • Maybe he shuts down during conflict.

  • Perhaps he struggles with closeness.

  • He’s self-sufficient and finds it hard to ask for help.

  • He tells you he loves you, but he’s emotionally unavailable.

  • Or he swings between needing space and wanting you close – but never too close.

You're not imagining it. And you're not alone.

There are an estimated 400,000-500,000 women who are married to men who went to boarding school. Not all of them have problems in their relationships, but your experience is doubtless repeated across the nation in all sorts of homes.

How would it feel to spend the next few weeks learning about and working on the issues which arise in relationships with men who went to boarding school?

Testimonial

I have just finished Sorrel’s six week course for the partners of ex-boarders.

For years I have struggled alone, with the impact that early boarding has had on my partner of 40 years. Sorrel’s warmth and wisdom and insight was truly like balm to my soul. I felt validated, appreciated and understood.

I am so grateful to Sorrel for recognising the need to share information and understanding about the devastating impact on so many children sent to boarding school. For it is only when this impact is acknowledged, that the necessary work can begin to repair the relational wounds that were sustained in these institutions and continue to wreak havoc in adult relationships.

Sorrel explained clearly and in depth, how a child or young person is affected by the separation from family and loved ones, and shared information and tools to begin the process of how to become more relational with each other.

Thank you Sorrel. I am eternally grateful to you. Please keep shining your light and sharing your wisdom!

Probably no one told you how the experience of boarding school might have affected your partner. But you may have noticed difficulties on his part in relation to:

💙 Emotional intimacy
📢 Communication
🥊 Conflict
🫸 Trust
🫶 The ability to feel and express love

Join The Bridge Back to Us and learn how his boarding school experience led him to be the way he is in relationships. And discover new ways of talking to him which will make it easier for him to respond positively to your need for communication and closeness.

I want to find a new way to reach my partner

The experience of boarding school exacts a dreadful toll on children which lasts well into adulthood. Many of us come out traumatised and emotionally shut-down.

For some boarding school survivors the trauma is obvious - memories of cold, hunger, bullying and abuse. But for others the trauma is more subtle and may be buried deep inside making it difficult to access the memories and emotions.

For men the process of burying emotions and denying fear or anxiety is just part and parcel of traditional masculinity. For the boarding school survivor it's like masculinity on steroids.

Part of the cost of a boarding school education is the challenges we experience in intimate relationships - and even in relationships with our children. Very often it is the survivor's partner who really bears the cost, attempting - often fruitlessly - to get through to him and encourage him to open up.

Frequently asked questions

The Bridge Back to Us, in 20 seconds:
A 6-week self-paced course for women partnered with ex-boarders. Learn why he shuts down, why he can't quite let you in and what you can actually do differently to reach him. £79. Available now. No prep needed, no partner involvement needed, go at your own pace.

What actually happens in the six weeks of the course?

Each week gives you new understandings and new tools. We start with what boarding school syndrome is and why it happens, move through his survival personality and the patterns it creates, and finish with practical tools like Deep Listening and the Feedback Wheel so you can put it all into practice.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

No preparation is required, though it can help to jot down beforehand the specific difficulties you're noticing in your relationship and what you would like to get out of the course. It gives you something to measure your progress against.

Does my partner need to know I'm doing this, or take part himself?

No. This course is entirely for you. It's about understanding him and changing what you bring to the relationship, not about getting him into a classroom.

Is this only for women who are married?

No, it's for any woman in a relationship, married or not, with a man who went to boarding school. It's not designed for people who are currently single, since the tools are built around an existing relationship.

Is this course suitable for men as well as women?

This course was designed for women. But if you are a man in a relationship with another man who went to boarding school you may still find it helpful to understand the dynamics in your relationship.

What if I fall behind, or need to go slower?

It's entirely self-paced home-study, so there's no live schedule to keep up with. Available now, go through it in six weeks or six months, whatever works for your life.

Hi, I'm Sorrel. I'm a trauma-informed relationship coach, working with people who have hit a road-block in their relationships.

I offer couples coaching and 1-to-1 coaching to boarding school survivors and their partners.

I'm certified as a Relational Life Coach with the Relational Life Institute which gives me the tools needed to work with couples.

After qualifying as an NLP Master Practitioner in 2017, I started coach training and qualified as a Certified Advanced CLARITY® Coach & Facilitator. I am also a licensed One of Many™ women's coach, bringing a more female approach to coaching. Before coaching I worked as an osteopath and retired in 2022 after 20 years in practice, in order to focus on coaching.

I have a BSc and an MPhil in Psychology, and in recent years I've realised that there is much to be gained by taking account of our spiritual nature - or what you may call the 'true self.' This is the source of our innate healing, enabling us to heal from the inside-out, leading to better mental health and more resilient relationships.
