These are anxious times. Since the pandemic of 2020 we've seen a huge increase in anxiety, but it was already there before the pandemic started. Most of us think of anxiety as a “bad thing.” But is it really? 

Human beings are very good at imagining the future, and it is often a scary future we imagine. If you find yourself caught up in anxiety, you are probably caught up in a vortex of what-ifs. And it may seem impossible to extricate yourself from it. 

This is what the human mind was designed to do. But it isn't always helpful!

Anxiety often follows from a feeling of overwhelm, when it feels like we are unable to cope with what we are dealing with. Anxiety is the voice of the mind telling us that we won't be able to cope with something we are anticipating. When it gets out of control, anxiety can lead to depression. And all of this is stuff we are making up!

You have innate well-being and resilience which are there all the time, just as the blue sky is there all the time. Clouds may come and go, but the blue sky is constant. Anxiety is a very human gift. We are all capable of imagining what might happen if… But let's put this into an evolutionary context. We are the top predator, not because we’re the fastest or the strongest and we certainly don’t have the sharpest claws. But we can plan, we can collaborate, and we can project into the future. We are also quite good at avoiding danger. But this is a double-edged sword being the evolutionary origins of anxiety. 

Anxiety is the main bedfellow of stress and overwhelm, and when left untended for too long it can lead to depression. One of the biggest problems with anxiety is being afraid of being anxious, which is the basis of panic attacks.

And then there is the impact of anxiety and depression on our health, whether it be poor sleep, headaches or irritable bowel syndrome. Or on our life chances, for instance when we don't go for that promotion at work because of a fear of being inadequate to the task (even imposter syndrome is a form of anxiety).

So what can you do about your anxiety or your depression? We all of us have innate resilience and resourcefulness which can allow us to access an underlying mental health and begin to live the life we have only dreamed of so far.
